Heart of the City Foundation Second Mile Fund To Help Injured Edgewater High Student C.J. Bellamy
On December 26, 2006, 17 year old C.J. Bellamy was randomly shot in the back in a drive-by attack at a gas station on Colonial Drive. At the time of the shooting, C. J. was an active junior at Edgewater High School, a member of the varsity basketball team, and a great kid with a bright future. Today, C. J. is paralyzed from the waist down and his parents are fighting to make ends meet as they care for their son and his two siblings.
As you can imagine, the Bellamy home needs to be renovated in order to allow C.J. to live a somewhat normal life. Specifically, in addition to the ramps that we have already installed, we need to convert their garage into a bedroom with a handicap accessible bath. As it stands today, C.J. is forced to struggle through his daily routine in a bathroom that is too small and not equipped for his needs. The cost of this project is estimated at $35,000.
A number of concerned people are helping the Bellamy family deal with this hardship. However, the situation calls for financial resources that require a wider outreach effort. The Second Mile Fund is being created to address this specific need and to create an endowment that will be in place to help others in the future.
